Without Oppo, I would be carless. Well, probably not. But I certainly would not have the car I have. My car was originally posted on Oppo. I loved it. I drove it. I bought it. And I would have never known about it but for an opponaut. So Dwhite, I don’t even know if you are still around, but I will have a beer in your honor tonight. And then a second beer to celebrate Oppo, the best damn car blog that ever was.

Without Oppo, I wouldn’t have the Mercedes E550 that I bought 2.5 years ago, either. A lot of that was support and education from AMGtech, but a lot of others contributed to that too.

(and yes, I’m very happy with the car so it’s a good thing)

Without Oppo, I wouldn’t have a job. I slapped something I fir st published here on my resume as a professional writing sample (which it was) and it got me in front of the right people.

Also, I wouldn’t have ever changed my own oil, learned exactly how to fix my roommate s girlfriend’s Nissan Altima, and gotten slightly better at identifying a car when I see it (I’m still no good though).

This ought to be a chain. “Without Oppo” is a very catchy title for a post where everyone can share their own stories (and then send the link to the devs so they can see exactly how many souls they’re crushing).

Without Oppo, I wouldn’t have met a lot of good people and had a place to vent. I’m thankful everyone put up with me through it.

I actually edited the title to try to turn it into just just a post.

Actually, looks like the edit did not work. :(

Without Oppo I would never have done my first rallycross

Without Oppo I would get more work done ... I mean I wouldnt have too much place to share my LEGO creations and stuff. All I have is Youtube.

Man, there are so many of us with stories like this. I’m also in the “Oppo got me a writing career” bucket, and yeah.

Hell yeah for encouraging you to do some car tasks yourself, too.

I like the “Without Oppo” idea. This should definitely be a thing.

Without Oppo, I wouldn’t have started writing about cars professionally.

The first time I can remember that I had anything shared to the front page was a blog about the track day I did at COTA right when COTA first relaxed a bit and let track day groups start renting it out. I was so grateful that Jalopnik made a big stink about how short-sighted it was that COTA wasn’t letting any track day groups run there because all of that attention really pushed them in the right direction. I need to go back again and do some more there, heh.

From there, I just kept posting about dumb little things I did and eventually met Hardibird, which led to a freelance role, which led to a “recruit” try-out with my own sub-blog on motorsports, which led to a full-time role.

I’ve met so many awesome folks through here, including some of my closest friends. Without Oppo, I’d have never had a Weekend at Mort’s at Dusty Ventures’ folks’ place. Haha.

My Puffalumps wouldn’t be nearly as famous without Oppo, either. The Puffalumps thank you.

I genuinely love all of you weirdos. Well, unless you’re rude to the Puffalumps. Then pound sand.

Without Oppo I wouldn’t have met other crazies who drive VW Phaetons or 3000GT VR4s or absolute masochists who do so at the same time. I wrote some stuff for fun. It was a great place to see other peoples’ rides or their questions. I a lways check oppo when looking for car reviews from people who have them.

Maybe when the day draws closer we’ll repost the idea and make it a big text chain, open for anyone and everyone. That could be the last big hurrah!

Also, hurray for writing gigs! Getting paid for writing stuff is always swell. If you don’t mind me asking, who are you writing for?

Nowadays, The Drive, but just on a part-time basis. I left Jalopnik right before it got sold to the current herbs, and that was my last full-time gig. As of right now, I kind of float around to wherever I want to write/whoever wants to publish me, but I’d ideally like to land in another full-time job. I took my vacations and farted around, so it’s time.

What about you? Always down to read more of Oppos’ stuff.

Without Oppo, I wouldn’t have realized I can write well about topics I’m actually interested in. After graduating college, I vowed never to write anything longer than a text for the rest of my life. Turns out, I just hate writing about history, books I was forced to read, and other elective courses I did not enjoy taking.

If someone told 2016 me I’d have a freelance writing gig in the future, I’d laugh hysterically and go back to playing Forza.

My core group of friends are not “car guys”. Sure, they enjoy cars. But not to the level that I or any of you guys and gals do. It would be difficult talking about how the Bronco has a different suspension set up than the Wrangler and how that matters on and off the road. They just don’t care. Not their fault. And the fiancé , bless her soul, tries her best to understand and listen to my ramblings of vans and such.

I probably wouldn’t have gotten in to rallycross if it wasn’t for you all. That’s huge. Seeing others send their vehicles around cones got me hooked instantly. Two years later, I now am the rallycross chair for my region.

Finding you guys and gals were awesome. I’ve learned so much about almost every topic out there. Learning about new things to eat and drink, places to check out, helping me buy unnecessary accessories for the van, I’ve never had a bad moment with any of you.

My promise still stands: beers (or drinks of any kind) on me if any of you come through Cleveland. Take care “internet friends” Don’t be strangers.

That’s awesome dude! Seems like you’ve been playing in the big leagues for a while now, but there’s something to be said for freelanc e gigs.

I haven’t gotten in with the mainstream media yet and am writing super part-time for a website called Hotcars while pursuing my degree. I’d love a full time (decent paying) job though, that’s the end goal, and Hotcars is something applicable I can slap on a resume.

Oh fun!

I gotta say, the lone good thing about freelancing is that you can fart around for three weeks in a whole ‘nother country and no one really cares that you’re gone. I mean, they sort of care, maybe, but yeah.

Farting around is a load of fun, isn’t it? Because school moved online I’ve had a lot of opportunities to take trips home (flying or driving) which has been super nice. But it also means I can do school from just about anywhere.

Still, would be nice to pay online tuition since I’m going to online school... but that’s a gripe against the college, not the perks of being online.

Without Oppo I would be much worse at wrenching. The advice on my build threads has always been phenomenal  and I am a better home mechanic because of it.
